Subject

Head of Working Area "Information Systems and Applications"

Nowadays, data have an immense value. However, in order to generate this value, an appropriate technical preparation is mandatory. Data represent a key enabler for applications such as eHealth applications or Industry 4.0 applications. Yet, data have special characteristics that distinguish them significantly from material resources. They are not consumed during processing and can be replicated indefinitely. As the value of data depends not only on its quality and quantity, but also on its exclusivity, data access has to be restricted on a fine-grained level. Furthermore, data can be easily manipulated. For safety-critical IoT applications, seamless end-to-end auditing from data source to data sink is essential. Finally, data are highly heterogeneous, which makes data management even more challenging.

Therefore, concepts and tools are required that enable trustworthy and demand-oriented data provisioning for users, such as data scientists and data analysts. Here, research questions regarding data acquisition, data management, data security, and data protection have to be addressed.

The working area "Information Systems and Applications" is dealing with providing answers to these research questions for data-intensive applications, for instance in the fields of data science, machine learning, and the Internet of Things.
