VitaBeat-Talents is a new funding project for particularly research-oriented students, launching at IPVS. The project is part of the Faculty Projects of the School for Talents at the University of Stuttgart, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) as part of the Excellence Strategy of the federal and state governments.
At its core is the further development of VitaBeat, a mobile research app that links music streaming data (e.g. from Spotify) with vital parameters measured via smartwatch, such as heart rate, and subjective well-being. VitaBeat itself emerged from several student research projects at IPVS and VIS and is currently in the beta testing phase on the Google Play Store.
As part of VitaBeat-Talents, a small group of students works on their own research questions related to the project — for example on music personalization, gamification, activity recognition, or music-driven wellbeing. Participants gain hands-on experience with the entire research process: from developing their own research idea, through study design and ethics approval, to implementation, data collection, and analysis — supported by researchers from IPVS and VIS.
With this project, we want to introduce particularly motivated students to real research questions as early as possible and support them on their way to their own publication. The goal is the publication of their results as a scientific paper, presented at a conference such as the German Student Conference on Computer Science (SKILL).
In addition, participants gain access to various networking opportunities offered by the School of Talents (e.g. excursions and events), further support for talented students, and a certificate of participation.
Who can apply?
The project is aimed at scientifically curious and motivated students of computer science, software engineering, AI & data science, and related degree programs (InfoTech, SimTech, ...), in their Master's or towards the end of their Bachelor's — in German or English. Interested students can send a short letter of motivation to vitabeat-talents@ipvs.uni-stuttgart.de; promising applicants will be invited to an interview. Please indicate if you wish to combine your participation with a student project.
