Prinzipien Vernetzter Systeme: Trends in Networking: SDN, NFV, TSN, and more

Currently, we can observe a number of new networking paradigms, concepts, technologies, and protocols that not only spawned interesting research work but also quickly gained strong support from industry including Google, Cisco, IBM, HP, NEC, Huawei, and many more. The following (non-exhaustive) list just names a few prominent examples:

Software-defined Networking (SDN): SDN increases the flexibility and efficiency of computer networks by out-sourcing network control (e.g., routing) from network elements (switches) to a so-called network controller running on standard servers. The network controller has a global view onto the network (logical centralization) and facilitates the implementation of network control logic “in software” using standard languages like C, Python, Java, or even declarative approaches.

Network Function Virtualization (NFV): NFV utilizes virtualization technologies to implement typical network functions and services like firewalls or intrusion detection without using dedicated hardware. Virtual network functions can be deployed flexibly on servers, moved between servers, chained into service chains, etc.

Time sensitive Networking (TSN): TSN is an extension to standard Ethernet (IEEE 802) specified by IEEE as part of the IEEE 802.1 standard. TSN allows for hard-real time communication with bounded delay over layer 2 switched networks as required, for instance, in Industry 4.0 manufacturing scenarios for controlling machines or robots, or in automotive scenarios connecting time-critical vehicular functions. A similar trend can be observed on the network layer for routed networks as standardized by the Internet Engineering Taskforce (IETF) within the IETF Deterministic Networking (DetNets) working group.  

In this seminar, we are going to discuss these (and more) trends in communication networks by having a closer look at the fundamental concepts and existing technologies by studying current research papers and standards.

Basic knowledge of computer networks.

Reports and talks can be either in German or English. Thus, English speakers are required to understand German and vice versa to understand the other talks (but you are free to choose the language of your own talk and report).
