Brief Description

Alcatel Research & Innovation Stuttgart is designing the so-called SuperP2P Multimedia Framework. This framework is used as streaming platform for sharing and distribution of live and file based content of commercial providers as well as personal content of users. It is realized as a peer-to-peer (P2P) system where the terminals of the users actively participate in providing the service rather than just using the services as clients. Besides these peers, an overlay network of powerful super peers is used for efficient content distribution. Looking up users, content, and services is a key functionality of this framework. The general objective of this collaboration is to adapt search technologies to peer-to-peer infrastructures such as the SuperP2P Multimedia Framework. In particular, suitable system architectures and distributed index structures supporting complex context-based queries beyond simple id-based look-ups in peer-to-peer systems have to be investigated. In a first step, a peer-to-peer-based service for looking up users with a certain context – for instance, users at a certain position, age, organization, etc. – is to be designed and implemented prototypically. Such a lookup service can for instance be used to contact people without knowing their fully qualified name or contact address, e.g., phone number, SIP URI, or e-mail address. This service is the basis for future extension, for instance, the search for multimedia contents or services.
