Large Scale Simulation
If you always wanted to know how to simulate earth-quakes, 3D printing, the milk foam in
your cappucino, towers bending in the wind and the noise generated by air conditioning
with a high accuracy on large parallel computers, course 9 of Ferienakademie 2015 is the
perfect choice for you. Each of the mentioned applications requires an extremly high resolution,
i.e., an enormous amount of data computed by solving hugh systems of equations. This makes
the use of todays most powerful supercomputers inevitable. Depending on the particular
characteristics of the problem, this poses various challenges. During the course, the
participants are going to present some of them and suitable solutions in talks and small
tutorials prepared in small groups (2-3 students). One of the mentioned applications is
going to be used as a showcase in each presentation.
The tentative list of challenges and methods (subject to change according to particular
interests of participants) comprises
parallel IO, parallel file systems, mesh generation and partitioning, Lattice-Boltzmann
methods, parallel multigrid solvers, performance engineering, parallel coupling of multiple
codes, data mapping between non-matching meshes, and efficient communication methods.
